If they are to ensure their future success as English language learners, teachers need to be able to provide our young learners of today with structured, co-ordinated and engaging instruction from the beginning. In this 3-hour PDC course, experts, Luciana C. de Oliveira, Helena Curtain and Gwendydd Caudwell will share their insights. In the first session, Helena will work to develop participants’ ability to identify curriculum that can establish the ground-work for promoting both curiosity and literacy in young learners. Then, they will work on ways to enhance the immediate interest value and cultural appropriacy of the themes developed while at the same time incorporating activities that will stimulate thinking. In the next session, Luciana will discuss the need for the classroom to be a place where learners have the support and opportunities that they need to learn language and content simultaneously. She will present the LACI model – a language-based approach to content instruction which is built on six C’s of scaffolding. Participants will try out specific strategies and activities that support youngsters and scaffold their learning. Finally, in any learning experience, it is necessary to have a means to test what has been learnt – but what constitute appropriate means of evaluating the learning of young learners? Is it appropriate to use similar testing techniques to those that are adequate for adults? This is the question that Gwendydd poses. After substantiating her challenge to that approach, Gwendydd will lead participants through a review of assessment tasks for the Speaking Skill as an example of how to tailor items so that they are more suited to the age group.
