For a teacher to become a leader in the field of TESOL, it is not enough to have leadership potential, or notable skills. Future teacher leaders must also have the knowledge and motivation to coach and mentor others with whom they work. Mentoring has often traditionally been framed within a context of seasoned teachers taking on a leadership or advisory role with new teachers. The relationship has most typically revolved around the practical development of teaching skills. However, recent research suggests that leadership development that incorporates mentoring and coaching is just as necessary in order to assist those teachers in becoming effective leaders in their professional communities. Coaching and mentoring seek to nurture leaders through a combination of theory and practice, predicated on reciprocal respect, a solid code of ethics and a strong perception of the core abilities necessary to lead forward the specific organization. In this PDC course, Sufian Abu-Rmaileh, Kathy O’Sullivan, Phil Quirke and Mohammed Azaza and Sonia Elhaj will explore what constitutes effective mentoring and coaching among teacher leaders.
