L1 in EMI: What Do Teachers Do?

Teachers may be urged or even mandated to not allow students’ first language (L1) in English-medium classrooms. However, many admit to using L1, regardless of policy. Researchers and practitioners are questioning the L2-only approach. We discuss both positions and the possibility of compromise based on research in Abu Dhabi.
