This paper reports on gemination in the pronunciation of English among Arab learners as in ‘collect’ > kul.likt and ‘correct’ > kur.rikt. Adopting an Optimality-Theoretic phonological framework, this study demonstrates that gemination is a purely phonological process and the role of spelling is minimal, if any.
