This presentation introduces a critical thinking course taught to intermediate students of English at a Japanese university. The course employed taxonomies of critical thinking and step-by-step problem-solving strategies to take students through a six-stage process in which they prepared, performed and evaluated a pair of complex debates.

David Rear is an Associate Professor at Nihon University, where he teaches critical thinking and intercultural awareness. He holds a doctorate in Applied Linguistics from Macquarie University, Australia.
