Learning to write effectively in a second language has represented a real difficulty for many ESL students for decades. Motivated by the limitations of previous studies, this paper aims at highlighting and discussing interactively EFL/ESL Arab students’ language proficiency and writing strategies and difficulties when composing direct and translated essays.

Sadiq Ismail is currently working in the College of Education, UAE University as an associate professor of English language education. His research interests include teacher education, ESP and language acquisition.
